Importance of Minerals and Trace Minerals in Maintaining a Healthy Life

We all are well aware of the importance of vitamins in the prevention of diseases and maintaining a healthy life. But there are few who are aware of the importance of minerals in our body that they are important in bone formation, oxygen transportation, and many more. So we see the importance of minerals in our body.

 Calcium

It helps in strong bone formation, healthy teeth, muscle formation, blood clotting, and maintaining the cell membrane of the body. Calcium is not produced in our body, so we have to take it through our diet to compensate for all the roles of calcium in our body. If there is a deficiency of calcium in our body, then diseases such as arthritis, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis develop in our bodies.

 Magnesium

Magnesium develops a healthy bone system and it is balanced with calcium. Both calcium and magnesium help in the prevention of osteoporosis.

 Phosphorous

It is present as a constituent in blood, bones, muscles, nerves, and teeth. And is important in the growth, maintenance, and repair of cells. It also maintains the PH of blood and plays a role in cancer prevention. If we become deficient with phosphorous, rickets, osteoporosis, pain in bones, irritability, stress develops.

 Potassium

Potassium helps in the proper working of muscles and the nervous system. It regulates heartbeat, maintains fluid balance, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the pain of arthritis. Potassium deficiency develops fatigue, muscle weakness, acne, dry skin, and irregular heartbeat.

 Iron

Iron is essential for red blood cells formation and for oxygen transportation. Its deficiency results in anemia.

 Sulfur

It plays a critical role in liver detoxification and is also essential for the structures of protein.

 Sodium

Sodium helps in the distribution of water in the body and maintains the fluid volume in the blood vessels and tissues.

Trace Minerals

These minerals are required by the body in a very small quantity.

Trace minerals include;

Selenium

It helps in protecting oxidative and pollutant damage and detoxifying heavy metals. Cancer can also be prevented by the intake of selenium-containing foods.

 Zinc

It enhances our immune defense system and helps in the healing of wounds. It is important for insulin activity and normal taste.

 Iodine

Iodine is required for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland.

Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers

They needed an extra amount of these minerals because besides improving their own health they should also have to take care of their baby's health.

Conclusion

For maintaining proper health and performing an active role in our society, we should have to take care of our nutrition. Not a single nutrient will improve our health but there are a series of nutrients that are needed to our body for the proper functioning of our body, some are required in small quantity and some are required in large amounts. We should also improve our emotions and behaviors related to our daily life besides improving and maintaining healthy nutrition.
