Diet Therapy of Edema

Edema

Abstract

What is edema, How to diagnose patients with edema, Causes Edema, Medications causing Edema, The Role of Potassium, Sodium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Antioxidants in treating edema?

Background

The chances of occurrence of Edema in our today's life are too high. In Edema, body fluids retain in the body and cause puffiness in the legs, arms, abdomen, and other parts of the body. Due to fluid retention in the body, kidneys don't perform their normal function and sodium level raises in our body and it causes water retention. And wastes products don't eliminate from the body and it also causes kidney stones. Similarly excess fluid causes the heart to not perform its functions and also provides hindrance in blood flow and it also causes oxygen deficiency in the body due to which pain occurs in various parts of our body.

Introduction

Edema

What is Edema?

Edema is a condition of inflammation in which excess fluid retains in our body and it occurs in various parts of the body i.e legs, ankles, face, abdomen.

Symptoms

·         Abdominal swelling

·         Face Puffiness

·         Legs inflammation

Medications Influencing Edema

                                                                             Medicines that cause Edema are;

·         NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen and naproxen)

·         Calcium channel blockers

·         Corticosteroids (like prednisone and methylprednisolone)

·         Pioglitazone

·         Pramipexole

Causes

·                                  Cardiovascular abnormalities (breathlessness, fatigue after doing some hard work)

  •           Right Heart Failure
  •          Malabsorption
  •           Malnutrition
  •           Cirrhosis of liver
  •           Nephropathy
  •           Hyperproteinemia

Diet Therapy of Edema

Lowering Salt Intake

Salt mostly contains sodium and chloride. Sodium causes water retention in the body which is the main cause of edema. So, if we lower the intake of salt, sodium level is also reduced in our body, and water is not retained in our body instead excess water is expelled through urine.

High Intake of Potassium

Potassium provides electrical signals to the neurons. It is a sodium antagonist and it maintains acid-base balance in the body. Potassium reduces sodium levels and in this way, the water level is maintained and excess fluid is eliminated from the body.

High Consumption of Water

If we maximize our water intake then the maximum amount of Urine is produced in our body, and also, waste materials are eliminated from the body. In this way, Edema is reduced from the body.

Increase Consumption of B6

Vitamin B6 is involved in the formation of red blood cells and many other functions of the body. It is also involved in the inhibition of water retention in the body.

Vitamin B6-rich foods include bananas, walnuts, meat, and potatoes.

Increase Intake Of Magnesium

Almost 300 enzymatic reactions are regulating by magnesium.

  • It also reduces water retention in the body, especially in premenstrual women.
  •  Magnesium-rich foods are grains, nuts, dark chocolates, and green leafy vegetables.

Conclusion

By taking care of our health and diet, we can overcome Edema. If we eat potassium-rich foods, magnesium-rich foods, vitamin B6, B12, Edema can be reduced and we live a healthy and happy life.
